ACAF NY: Asian Contemporary Art Fair
Surprisingly under the radar, New York’s first art fair dedicated entirely to Asian contemporary art opened quietly yesterday with the invite-only cocktail and performance by Sin Cha Hong and the band, Second Hand Rose. An event of this magnitude should have had a more intense marketing blitz, and I’m still scratching my head over why little, or no, press was anywhere to be found — definitely nothing timely.
Hit the jump for all the relevant information on an event you shouldn’t miss.
The first annual ACAF NY, co-directed by Thomas Arnold of Mary Boone Gallery and independent curator, Inhee Iris Moon, is open at Pier 92 until Monday, November 12.
November 9: 11-7 pm
November 10: 11-7 pm
November 11: 11-6 pm
November 12: 11-5 pm (Free Admission)
There is a also special curated exhibition on premises titled Simulasian: Refiguring “Asia” for the 21st Century. Curators Eric C. Shiner and Lilly Wei posit this:
In the first decade of the 21st-century, the idea of “Asia” has become increasingly amorphous: is it a continent, a mindset, a physical body, a conceptual identity?
Today, the contemporary art of any region is as informed by its neighbors, near or far, as it is by local traditions and histories. For the inaugural Asian Contemporary Art Fair, the work of 27 artists whose work explores this diverse “idea of Asia” will show how many artists are moving beyond—and often times deconstructing and decoding—the stereotypical Asia in favor of one that is more complex and inclusive. The exhibition will thus make visitors question their own perceptions of what Asia is, and urge them to “de-Orientalize” the notion of Asia, viewing it not only as a place, but as a truly global philosophy that infects, informs and encourages artistic production around the world.
Artists include:
Bani Abidi, Ilona Rozeal Brown, Emily Cheng, David Diao, Brendan Fernandes, Chitra Ganesh, Max Gimblett, Ran Hwang, Chen Chieh-Jen, Ranbir Kaleka, Ali Kazim, Terence Koh, Emiko Kasahara, Jeremy Kost, Tracey Moffatt, Susan Norrie and David Mackenzie, Hung-chih Peng, Cai Qing, Ataru Sato, Ai Weiwei, Saya Woolfalk, Noriko Yamaguchi, Miwa Yanagi, Masayuki Yoshinaga
