Tonight: Sanford Biggers Presents The Somethin’ Suite
Sanford Biggers is a conceptual artist based in New York. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he tackles the elements of culture in his work, which ranges from video to performance to works on paper. A two-year stint in Japan proved very influential, and since moving to New York in 1999, he has become a notable presence on the scene.
One of 10 PERFORMA commissions for this year’s festival, The Somethin’ Suite is Sanford Biggers’ take on a minstrel show, the bygone tradition that is as provocative and controversial today as ever.
From the PERFORMA site:
The Somethin’ Suite, following minstrelsy’s traditional 3-act structure, is performed by spoken-word artist Saul Williams, singers Esthero, Shae Fiol, Imami Uzuri, and Martin Luther, and DJs CX KiDTRONiX and Jahi Sundance, whose talents combine to provide a sonic history of contemporary music as well as a clear-eyed examination of today’s popular music industry.
Details for tonight’s two performances after the jump.
