Tom Otterness Lands in DUMBO
Tom Otterness, perhaps best known to New Yorkers as the artist behind the cartoonish brass creatures all over the A/C/E/L station at 14th Street and 8th Avenue, will be celebrating his latest public art piece today in DUMBO. “Large Covered Wagon” depicts a Lego-like man with a pipe and a yoked ox that happens to be wearing shoes. This whimsical piece was installed Friday, April 11, and will be on view through January 2009.
So if you’re out and about and want to see the artist, or see who shows up at this event, head over to the intersection of Prospect Street and Washington in DUMBO at 5:30 pm. Apparently there will be music by the Ebony Hillbillies, a group I am not familiar with, but their photo and name seem promising!
In an interesting twist, there seems to be a group of irate Brooklynites upset with Otterness over a project he did in his 20s in which he killed an adopted dog on film. Otterness has apologized for the stunt, but that hasn’t appeased his critics, who have vowed to let their canine friends relieve themselves all over the new large covered wagon, perhaps today at 5:30.
