East Village pipe briefly converted to lo-res fountain [Update]

Pipe

On April 18th, 2008, a pipe near the corner of 2nd Ave and east 9th Street poured pixelated water onto the pavement in what looks to be the work of an anonymous urban installation artist (though I suppose it’s possible that someone simply forgot to shut off the city’s 8-bit water supply.) The brevity of the installation and its proximity to Cooper Union, as well as some adjacent artworks (tiny, colorful doors lining the walls nearby) suggests to me the work of an accomplished NYC art student–though I would be happy to be corrected on this point by the artist.

[Update: The installation was subsequently defaced before it was removed entirely.  Evidence after the jump.]

Lo-res fountain defaced.
